Title

Designing Human-Centric Urban Mobility – Policies, Technologies and Paradigms.

Concept

We’ve seen how cities globally are rethinking mobility; not just from a tech perspective, but also through governance, land use and how space is shared. Yet in Southeast Asia, we’re still stuck in a car-centric logic. Even with billions poured into MRT, LRT and BRT, the real modal shift hasn’t happened. Malaysia’s own public transport usage is still hovering around 20 percent.

This session aims to cut through the idealism and bring the conversation back to what it really takes to build post-car cities; whether it’s through better policy frameworks, autonomous vehicles, small-format transit like podcars, or stronger institutional leadership. It’s about real-world transitions, not just concepts.

Objective

We’ll explore what kind of reforms, tech applications and political will are needed to move from car-dependence to more people-centric systems. This is especially important for countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand that are trying to leapfrog without necessarily fixing their institutional fragmentation.

Suggested talking points:

– Why most ASEAN cities are still trapped in a car-first logic despite growing infrastructure

– What lessons can be drawn from experiments in Europe, USA, UAE and East Asia on reclaiming road space

– Whether tech like AVs (Autonomous Vehicles) and podcars can succeed without clear urban governance and land use reform

– What a realistic regulatory pathway looks like for next-gen mobility systems in this region

– How public and private sectors can align to deliver these changes
